Joy Watts, PhD University of Portsmouth, UK

Joy Watts is a Professor in Environmental Microbiology at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Her research group is involved with the application of molecular tools to better understand microbial diversity and interactions in the environment. The areas studied include; antimicrobial resistance in the environment and its transfer and concentration in aquatic systems; the diversity and function of microbes associated with the GI tract of xylophagous organisms and their role in degradation of complex polymer with a specific focus on the detection of novel anaerobic degrading microbes.
Professor Watts received her PhD from the University of Warwick, UK and then performed her postdoctoral studies at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology, University of Maryland. She obtained an Assistant Professor position at Towson University, USA and in 2010 moved back to the UK to take up her current position at the University of Portsmouth.
