Micrographs showing trichomes of genotype LA1777 (a) and LA4024 (b & c) with living bacteria colored in green (bright spots). The visualization was conducted with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in combination with the LIVE/DEAD™ BacLight™ Bacterial Viability Kit. Bacteria are accumulated in close proximity to trichome heads in all analyzed samples and were alive at the time point of sample collection as indicated by differential staining. Propidium iodide intercalates with plant DNA, thus the plant nuclei are stained in red
