Lignin concentration was measured by removing 1 ml of culture from anaerobic septum bottles, diluting 1:10 in distilled water, filtering out cells, then measuring the absorbance at 310 nm. These values were compared to a standard curve of known concentrations of lignin in mGV medium measured at this wavelength
